North and West London Town Centres Study

The North West London Strategic Alliance (NLSA)and the West London Alliance (for the West London Partnership) have appointed consultants URBED and UCL to undertake a study on the comparative success of North and West London’s town centres and those outside, on the periphery of London.

The aim of this project is to identify the success factors of a range of town centres on London’s periphery and consider how they might be applied to improve the performance of centres in London.  It is intended to encourage debate about how we might positively influence development over the coming decade to increase outer London’s economic competitiveness, provide a diverse range of employment opportunities/ services and enhance the area’s quality of life and sustainability.

The Study is expected to consider:

• Retail / consumer services demands, e.g. servicing a growing population
• The evening economy, e.g. servicing a changing demography
• The knowledge economy – what office-based activities are located or might locate in outer London?
• Creative and cultural Industries/ facilities; leisure and community facilities
• Other employment activity/ services, both public and private
• Transport accessibility
• The strategic health, equalities and environment impacts
• The impact of town centre management/BIDs

The consultants are expected to complete their report by November 2007.

In addition, on 0th September 2007 the NLSA will be staging a conference on town centres.

More information about the research can be obtained from Stephen King, the project manager for NLSA Stephen.King@haringey.gov.uk . The WLA leads are Claire Codling (Claire.codling@harrow.gov.uk) and Ian Dunsford (idunsford@hillingdon.gov.uk)
